If you’ve recently taken a pregnancy test, you may be wondering what to do next.

An ultrasound is the best way to confirm important details about your pregnancy and protect your reproductive health. At Lakeside Women’s Clinic, we offer free, limited ultrasounds in a caring and supportive environment. Schedule your visit today to get the answers you need.

How the Ultrasound Process Works

An ultrasound uses sound waves (not radiation) to produce images of your uterus and pregnancy. A trained nurse or sonographer will either:

  • Conduct a transvaginal ultrasound early in pregnancy for a clearer picture. This early scan involves a wand-like transducer that’s inserted into the vagina.
  • Conduct an abdominal scan later in pregnancy by gliding a transducer across your stomach through a water-soluble gel. This gel helps sound waves travel more efficiently, resulting in a clear image.

The sound waves bounce off the structures in the body back to the transducer. Then, a computer creates a real-time image, allowing your provider to assess key details about your pregnancy.

What an Ultrasound Shows You

An ultrasound provides vital information, such as:

  • Heartbeat: This is confirmation that your pregnancy is viable and progressing, and you have not miscarried.
  • Gestational Age: You will learn how far along you are to estimate your due date and identify what options are available to you.
  • Pregnancy Location: You will find out whether your pregnancy is safely within the uterus or ectopic (outside the uterus, which requires urgent care).
